If you’re looking for a loving companion who will play eagerly but gently with children and who will also accompany you in all outdoor pursuits, then the English Springer Spaniel is your perfect match!
They need lots of exercise and companionship with their humans, so you would need to give them lots of attention and spend plenty of time walking, them and playing. They are also very fast learners and quick to obey, so are fun to train.
Get them outside running and swimming as much as possible – a rural setting or home with access to nearby woods, fields and water would be ideal. If you have other pets, you’ll find this breed gets on perfectly well with other animals. Though take care with birds as they are bred to hunt and may consider a pet canary to be prey!
Their coats need brushing at least around three times a week to stay healthy and shiny, and to avoid shedding over clothes and furniture. They also need a trim around the head, neck, ears, tail, and feet. Due to their beautiful flopping ears, you may want to check their ears regularly for any redness or sign of infection.
All in all, the English Springer Spaniel is the perfect family dog, and a loving companion. Whilst they need a lot of attention and exercise so are not always ideal if you don’t have a lot of spare time to give your dog, their tenacious and affectionate nature will delight any dog owner.
